‘Bell Bottom’ has the allure of a Bollywood big-budget commercial picture that deserves to be seen on the big screen. An engrossing thriller that transports you back to the big screen.
Critic’s Rating: 3.5/5
Bellbottom, an undercover spy, is sent on a secret operation to rescue 210 hijacked passengers.
Akshay Kumar plays a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) covert operative known as ‘Bell Bottom’ in the espionage thriller Bell Bottom. Kumar is called in to rescue the day after a plane is kidnapped and arrives in Amritsar, the sixth hijacking occurrence in five years. His preparations for a daring clandestine operation to rescue 210 hostages and neutralize four hijackers are the focus of the film. His surgery is all the more powerful since it is linked to personal sorrow.
This Ranjit Tiwari-directed film is based on two events that occurred in the late 1970s and early 1980s during Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister of India, similar to numerous previous Kumar films that are based on true events. It’s admirable that the film was shot on location in India and Scotland during the epidemic.
Kumar’s brilliant performance as Bell Bottom draws a lot of applause and cheers, and no one can deny that he looks handsome at 53. He’s slender, fit, and nimble, with a sassy Army-man demeanor. Bell Bottom, who plays Vaani Kapoor’s spouse, is a national-level chess player. He has a good memory and speaks Hindi, English, French, and German fluently.
Vaani Kapoor, who plays Kumar’s wife, is stunning on screen, and despite her short screen time, she does an excellent job supporting her role. Adil Hussain, Huma Qureshi, and Lara Dutta all play key parts in the film. Given the amount of excitement around the film, particularly Dutta’s make-up, we can safely assume that her transformation into former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is rather impressive.
She’s almost unrecognizable! Huma Qureshi seems to assist the Indian team in rescuing Indian passengers trapped on the hijacked airliner.
Akshay Kumar is in top form and consistently powerful. He makes the most of his celebrity, and he does it with zeal. It takes a lot of confidence and conviction to play Indira Gandhi on TV, and Dutta does an excellent job in the role. Dolly Ahluwalia plays Kumar’s mother, and the two have several heartwarming and humorous sequences together.

The film, which was written by Aseem Arora and Parveez Shaikh, is intriguing and manages to keep your interest for the entire 123 minutes. However, because there is a lot of back and forth in the tale, you will have to cling on to every minute of the action as it develops. The film’s pace is consistent, and the story and characters do not lose steam.
The things that occur do not truly absorb you emotionally as you ride along with the plot. You’d think a film of this nature would have a lot of goosebumps, but that’s not the case. In addition, the film left some unsolved topics, such as the anguish of the captives and the terrorists’ preparations for hijacking. The film’s finale is a little lackluster and ends suddenly.
The picture has issues in general, yet it never fails to entertain. ‘Bell Bottom’ has the allure of a Bollywood big-budget commercial picture that deserves to be seen on the big screen. And, of course, because this picture celebrates the reopening of theatres after months of closure due to the pandemic’s second wave, audiences may have a great cinematic experience with this one.
