Story:
Kapil Sharma, one of the most popular comedians on television, has released his first online series, ‘I’m Not Done Yet,’ on Netflix.
Review:
Kapil relates his personal and financial troubles, fight with depression and drinking, Twitter scandal, and professional failures in his first solo stand-up special in almost a decade. With the exception of a great Covid joke towards the opening, Kapil avoids that type of humor throughout the film. He even sings in English in the end, stepping outside his comfort zone. You have to wonder whether this is an attempt to appease the English-speaking OTT crowd, who may regard themselves as elitists and reject his sense of comedy. Whatever the case may be, Kapil does not appear to be at ease. He sees the Netflix prospect as more of an emotional self-help tool that also happens to make you grin.

Switch to his ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ instead if you want to laugh out loud. The performance, which lasts around 50 minutes, reveals a side of Kapil who is still grieving over his father’s death and his own lost twenties. The story is a jumble of bittersweet memories. Kapil’s opportunity of being a carefree child was also shattered when his supporting father died of illness. His twenties were filled with financial obligations, as they were for most middle-class families.

You have to wonder if the comic, who is in his late 30s, allows himself to have fun. It’s possible that it’s an attempt to turn back the clock and live a little more freely now that money isn’t a problem. His father didn’t have much, but he was always there for his kid, and his views about his father would make you cry.
While the tone is more emotional than humorous, it is never depressing. Life’s hardships are humorously recounted, and mental health is given emphasis. The performance also included Kapil’s interaction with his therapist, acceptance of despair, a drunken outburst on Twitter, and jibes at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and political bots on social media. The most fascinating incident of the bunch is his recounting a disastrous performance at an IPL (Mumbai Indians) event where none of his punches worked.
Though emotionally satisfying, one would expect Kapil’s stand-up special to be humorous, and it fails to do so. The change of setting appears to constrain Kapil, who lives on interacting spontaneous humour. Instead of being an audience member to a well-known comedian, you feel like you’ve barged into a family gathering.
Kapil is surely not finished yet, since he is capable of much more.
