Marry Me Review:

Just when we thought fairy tale rom-coms were a thing of the past, along comes another Hollywood blockbuster with major stars performing what we used to enjoy in the 1990s. Katalina “Kat” Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) is a celebrity whose life is chronicled by a devoted videographer 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So it’s only natural that she falls in love with Bastian (Maluma), a fellow singer who is traditionally good-looking, attractive, and a fiery performer. It’s a match made in paradise, and it’s almost too wonderful to be true.

On their wedding day, Kate discovers that he’s just another cheating ba$&*#d, and she decides to marry a random stranger from the crowd on the spur of the moment. We don’t need or want to tell you what occurs next because you’ve probably guessed the conclusion by now. Unpredictability is certainly not one of filmmaker Kot Coiro’s strong suits in his picture, which is based on Bobby Crosby’s comic novel of the same name.

Marry Me' Review: Jennifer Lopez Tries to Save the Rom-Com | IndieWire

The narrative, which is situated in the contemporary day of rapid satisfaction led by likes, comments, and shares, has a lot of old-world charm and simplicity. And that’s where it really shines.

The film begins with a shocking confrontation, the consequences of which are well-explained in a comforting manner. Human connections are at its foundation, and it follows rom-com cliches similar to those seen in films like ‘Notting Hill.’ Of course, there’s always the worry that it’ll all come off as too made-up or corny, but ‘Marry Me’ seldom does. The music, however, is only mediocre for a film in which the protagonist is a renowned singer. The discussions are far more powerful.

Marry Me starring Jennifer Lopez & Owen Wilson Trailer Release Date Announced

As the strong yet sensitive Kat, Jennifer Lopez is stunning, engaging, and just cute. Her incredible screen presence not only belies her age but also makes us want to cheer for her.

Owen Wilson does an excellent job as Charlie, the calm and collected wise guy. Although, rather than portraying him conveniently divorced, we wish there was more flesh in his character’s backstory. Maluma’s tattooed sex appeal compliments Jlo’s hotness, but he doesn’t have much room to shine. As is to be anticipated, John Bradley and the rest of those loitering about the central protagonists are grotesque caricatures.

Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson Get Married in 'Marry Me' Trailer - Variety

‘Marry Me’ isn’t really innovative, but it’s still enjoyable. It’s a love story for perpetual optimists and hopeless romantics alike. It’s a return to the fundamentals, and it feels good.

Marry Me is based on the comic novel by Bobby Crosby and directed by Kat Coiro (Dead to Me, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, forthcoming She-Hulk) from a script by John Rogers (The Librarians) and Tami Sagher (NBC’s 30 Rock) and Harper Dill (The Mick). Jennifer Lopez p.g.a. and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas p.g.a. (Hustlers, Maid in Manhattan) for Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions, John Rogers for Kung Fu Monkey Productions, and Benny Medina for Kung Fu Monkey Productions are producing the picture (Hustlers, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air). Alex Brown, Willie Mercer, Pamela Thur, and J.B. Roberts serve as executive producers on the picture.

Marry Me, starring Jennifer Lopez as musical superstar Kat Valdez and Owen Wilson as math teacher Charlie Gilbert—total strangers who agree to marry and then get to know each other—comes out next Valentine’s Day, packed with original songs by Jennifer Lopez and global Latin music phenomenon Maluma. Marry Me is a modern love tale about stardom, marriage, and social media. It is an unexpected romance about two different individuals yearning for something true in a world where value is determined by likes and follows.
