A police recruit attempts to apprehend the assailants who murdered his sister. A strong, though rather formulaic, action drama.

The prologue of Veeramae Vaagai Soodum (VVS) alternates between three occurrences. A gang is en route to exact revenge on a guy they have abducted. The other two include a gang of kids and a few small-time crooks who are waiting for someone to come along. The film’s highlight is director Thu Pa Saravanan’s ability to let these three tracks blossom simultaneously before ultimately bringing them together.
But first, we meet Porus (Vishal, adequate), who is training to join the police force, and his family: his father (Marimuthu, playing a softer role for a change), a lowly policeman who just follows his superior’s instructions; and his mother (Marimuthu, playing a softer character for a change).

His mother (Thulasi, in a supporting role) is a regular middle-class housewife, while his younger sister Dwaraka is a college student (Raveena Ravi, poignant). Then there’s his bank employee pal (Yogi Babu) and lover Mythili (Dimple Hayathi, okayish). Guna, the brother of a local thug, harasses Dwaraka, and the fight escalates to the point that the girl attempts suicide.
In the meanwhile, there are two subplots.
One is Parisutham (Elango Kumaravel, affecting), who is fighting alone struggle against a factory that is polluting his town and is run by Nedunchezhian (Baburaj, uninspiring), a rich gangster-type who is seeking to enter politics. Then there’s Divya, who needs to defend herself against four college lads with huge connections who have made an indecent film of her.

Each of the three tracks builds to a point when the villains are embarrassed and ready to retaliate. However, there is a misunderstanding, and Dwaraka becomes the unlucky victim. Can Porus hunt out those guilty for her killing, especially when the killer is closing up loose ends quickly, with no hint as to who could have hurt her?
VVS follows in the footsteps of previous Vishal films such as Irumbu Thirai and Chakra in terms of plot – an average man must discover the identity of a criminal who is as cunning as he is. In place of the previous films’ cybercrime and robbery, we now get corrupt industrialists and gangsters.

And, much as in those movies, the protagonist pursues them for personal reasons. It’s not quite as good as Irumbu Thirai, but it’s a vast improvement over Chakra. Saravanan’s ability to build suspense in each of the three tracks keeps us fascinated. The film then becomes a cat-and-mouse game in the second half, with both the protagonist and adversary attempting to outwit one other.
VVS is engrossing as long as it stays true to the basic narrative. There is tension and excitement, and we are also emotionally involved since Saravanan has done an excellent job of setting up the Porus family. This is why we have the impression that we are witnessing a high-octane action film.
Only when he gets away from it do the fissures become obvious, like in the romance tune between Porus and Mythili. The way this music is constructed comes off as rather coarse for a film that demonstrates some intellect. Yes, this is a business decision, but why not give the viewers a more satisfying romance? Take, for example, the scenario in which Porus arrives at Mythili’s house after she informs him that her father is attempting to forge an alliance.
What we get instead is a ridiculous scenario in which he slips into her house while the potential groom and his family are considering marriage, enters her bedroom, and acts as though they are making out! Neither amusing nor humorous,
The film is also overlong, with people uttering a lot of language in instances where a few short phrases would have made the scenario more interesting. While one of Parisutham’s analogies about the evil being animals preying on the vulnerable is effective, another, using a mouse, feels overdone. The dubbing’s irregularity is clearly noticeable. The other action sequences, with the exception of a brawl inside a pub, feel less dramatic and overly generic.
