Maanagaram – In the first scene of Maanagaram, a character informs his interviewer that he would like to work in his hometown, a small village, but that working in the city is more prestigious, thus he has chosen to work in a BPO. We expected this to be one of those city-bashing films that make a point of pointing out how bad the city and its people are at every turn, but director Lokesh Kanagaraj delivers an exquisite, even-handed thriller — beautifully shot (Selvakumar SK), tightly edited (Philomin Raj), and supported by a grungy score (Javed Riaz) — that subtly makes its points while telling a gripping story. The fact that the majority of the crew are first-timers adds to the feat’s awe.
