James Wan’s return to horror isn’t especially effective in ‘Malignant.’
The newest picture from the director of “Saw” and “The Conjuring” has some excellent moments but ultimately comes across as overly mechanical.
Malignant appears to be the result of a computer meticulously executing an algorithm that goes something like this. Take a creepy hospital, a haunted mansion, three dangerous physicians doing dubious experiments, a distraught pregnant woman, and two witty detectives. Jump scares, electrical appliances going on by themselves, a massive twist, and, most importantly, gruesome murders will keep you on your toes. Blend for a few minutes on high speed, and your scary movie is ready to watch.
Malignant is a supernatural slasher film about Maddie (Annabelle Wallis), who lives in a huge old home with a lot of twisting hallways and pounding screen doors and is in an abusive relationship. Maddie begins to hear the voice of Gabriel after the tragic loss of her husband, Derek (Jake Abel) (Ray Chase).
Many years ago, three physicians, Weaver (Jacqueline McKenzie), Fields (Christian Clemenson), and Gregory (Amir AboulEla), were trying to contain a patient named Gabriel who allegedly had the capacity to manipulate electricity, among other things.

Maddie appears to be able to see murders even as they occur in the present, following the death of her husband. Even though Maddie’s sister, Sydney (Maddie Hasson), attempts to persuade them, Detectives Shaw (George Young) and Moss (Michole Briana White) find it difficult to trust Maddie. In addition, a tour guide has been abducted and is being held, hostage. Things start to clear up as Maddie dives further into her background.
Wan’s return to horror isn’t especially successful, and it’s a little too mechanical, but it’s nonetheless entertaining.
The film Malignant is now showing in theatres.
