This adaptation is true to the source material. It delivers on its promise of unadulterated sinful pleasure. You know precisely what to anticipate when you come inside the theatre… a pulpy horror film in which gun-wielding survivors slaughter a swarm of ugliness zombies and monsters The scares are perversely enjoyable, and the set pieces are as terrifying as they should be. It’s the ideal Halloween thriller, complete with plenty of blood and gore, motorcycles, fierce ladies, and a background.
But something isn’t quite right. The film’s rhythm and aim, though, feel a little off. The build-up is well-executed. It manages to bring you to a gloomy place without being rushed. Think of Pripyat following Chernobyl. The houses, the haunted orphanage, the toys, the lonely evenings, and the streets give you the creeps. However, after the major characters are presented, the picture devolves into a B-grade thriller with little regard for the plot.
The gap feels too blatant, as it shifts from gently developing curiosity to rushing to give us thoughtless action.
If you’re looking for nothing more than a normal zombie film with pulpy action, this one will suffice. If you’re looking for a method to the madness, this isn’t the book for you.
