The strategy is for Emma to friend-seduce Peter’s ex-girlfriend Anne’s (Gina Rodriguez) new boyfriend Logan (Manny Jacinto), while Peter will friend-seduce Emma’s ex-boyfriend Noah (Scott Eastwood) to get him to break up with Ginny (Clark Backo). Naturally, while Emma and Peter plan and come up with this scheme, they get to know one another and unintentionally fall in love.

While the two attempt to carry out their plan, there are hilarity and shenanigans, but it is safe to say—without giving anything away—that everyone ends up exactly where they belong.

My Policeman (2022)

In the film My Policeman, Harry Styles plays a police officer named Tom, Emma Corrin plays a teacher named Marion, and Patrick plays a museum curator. The Lost City (2022)

In the action-romantic comedy The Lost City, Sandra Bullock (Bullet Train) and Channing Tatum (Kingsman: The Golden Circle) are just tempting. Bullock portrays the bereaved romance author Loretta Sage, and Tatum plays the aspirational book cover model Alan. It’s Alan’s responsibility to save Loretta when she is abducted while on her book tour, which leads to loud jungle antics and adventure.

While Brad Pitt’s brief cameo is enjoyable, Daniel Radcliffe (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) exudes joy in portraying a nasty role as their kidnapper. Director Adam Nee, who co-wrote the screenplay with Oren Uziel and Dana Fox, knows how to make the most of his actors by stacking star power on top of a fun story.

Love Accidentally (2022)

Love Accidentally is a beautifully light and fun television movie written by Robert Dean Klein, who is usually renowned for his dark and tense TV movies.

Marry Me (2022)

Marry Me is as corny as romantic comedies come, which is why it succeeds. Pop diva Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) decides to wed Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson), a math teacher waving a “Marry Me” sign at her concert, after finding out that her on-stage companion Bastian (Maluma) has been having an affair.

Charlie Gilbert is a math teacher. Both the movie’s plot and its idea are ridiculous, but it doesn’t matter since this is one of those movies where the cheesiness draws you in. It’s one of those dated romantic comedies from the early 2000s that just isn’t produced as frequently these days. – a throwback that makes you feel nostalgic in addition to the possible second-hand shame. A beautiful glass of wine strikes the ideal balance and will make for the ideal evening.

The High Note (2020)

Cast: Dakota Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kelvin Harrison Jr.

The R&B artist Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross), who is still popular despite not having recorded new music in over a decade, has Maggie Sherwoode (Dakota Johnson) as her longtime personal assistant in the brilliant dramedy The High Note. Maggie, who aspires to be a music producer, attempts to persuade Grace to continue creating music despite her manager’s encouragement to pursue a Vegas residency and cease writing new songs.

Additionally, Maggie and David, an arrogant but wonderful singer, have a swoon-worthy romance (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). The movie gives a welcome look at women attempting to establish and maintain their names in a cutthroat industry in addition to being a captivating rom-com.

Emma (2020)

Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Bill Nighy, Mia Goth

We all adore Clueless, but Autumn de Wilde’s rendition of the popular Jane Austen book from 2020 stays true to the Regency era and is in no way less approachable. Anya Taylor-Joy has never had more magnetism, and her heartbreakingly funny portrayal is commensurate with the renowned novel by Austen (and Alicia Silverstone, for that matter).

Taylor-Joy is ideally paired with the emerging British sensation Johnny Flynn, who also provided the original song “Queen Bee” to the soundtrack. It’s a visually stunning accomplishment, especially for a first-time filmmaker, and received nominations for the Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Make-up and Hairstyle.

Sylvie’s Love (2020)

Cast: Tessa Thompson, Nnamdi Asomugha, Ryan Michelle Bathe, Regé-Jean Page

Sylvie’s Love is a surefire hit if you’re seeking a swoon-worthy historical drama. Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha are two ambitious creatives who first connect over their love of jazz in 1957 in New York. This connection ties them together for a passionate, decades-long love affair with intoxicating highs and heartbreaking lows.

Eugene Ashe’s romantic drama is a lush, lovely slow-burn. With a piece of great and perfectly jazzy music, cinematographer Declan Quinn creates a beautiful, opulent setting for their love to blossom. While Sylvie’s Love perhaps goes a bit too slowly, spending so much time with the characters and allowing them so many opportunities to breathe also draws you further into their beautiful, if tumultuous, relationships.

His Girl Friday (1940)

Possibly the gold standard for screwball comedies, the traditional romantic comedy In the movie His Girl Friday, Rosalind Russell plays Hildy, the lead reporter, and ex-wife of Cary Grant, who finds out she is engaged to another man.

He persuades Hildy to look into one more tale with him in an effort to win her back, and the two renew their romance in the middle of the hilarious antics and developing mystery. It’s a roaring comedy classic, still captivating because of Grant and Russell’s classic movie star magnetism and Howard Hawkes’ renowned directorial prowess.

What If (2013)

Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan, Adam Driver, Mackenzie Davis, Megan Park

Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan are two of the nicest, friendliest performers in the business, and their 2013 rom-com What If is just as friendly and endearing as you’d anticipate. With Radcliffe playing Wallace, a young man scarred by a string of failed relationships, the movie offers an intriguing but ultimately predictable spin on the genre. Wallace strikes up an immediate friendship (and undeniable chemistry) with Chantry (Kazan), who just so happens to live with her longtime boyfriend.

They explore what it means to be best friends with someone who may also be your soul match together. As a comic counterpoint to Wallace and Chantry’s abstinent love, Adam Driver and Mackenzie Davis play a demonstrative, passionate couple who are unable to keep their hands off of one other. It’s a timeless feel-good rom-com with an unmatched ensemble that is entertaining, charming, and clever.

Charade (1963)

Cast: Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau

Charade is one of the key early works in a genre I like to refer to as “hot criminals doing sexy crime” and is equal parts romance and crime thriller. Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn are the gorgeous crooks in question, engaging in a dazzling competition of on-screen appeal in a movie that was firmly rooted in the lively Old Hollywood shtick that was dying out just as “grittier” filmmaking was beginning to take hold of the movie industry.

See, there’s a lot of murdering going on, and Grant and Hepburn are making some awfully sexy looks at each other, but thanks to the great Stanley Donen’s direction, the 1963 caper is firmly rooted in that Golden Age atmosphere, interested above all in delivering one heck of a good time at the movies, breezing through one twisty-turny reveal after another, Grant and Hepburn beaming at each other the entire time.

Life Itself (2014)

Cast: Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Annette Benning,‌ Mandy Patinkin

I can’t tell you that Life Itself is a romantic comedy with good conscience. But it is a totally perplexing, surprising, and singular cinematic experience that you must see to believe. Just attempt to follow the melodrama of Life Itself’s emotionally terroristic turns and turns. Recall the concluding huge “Oh crap” discovery from the first This Is Us episode? In an absolutely absurd, cuckoo bananas, an epic love story with an over-the-top richness of talent in the ensemble, Life Itself is like the weaponized version of that, over and over again. Don’t miss it, but proceed with caution.

Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)

Run Time: 1 hr 43 min | Director: Paul Downs Colaizzo

Cast: Jillian Bell, Michaela Watkins, Utkarsh Abudkar

In the greatest possible manner, the movie Brittany Runs a Marathon is not what you think it is. In the movie, Jillian Bell plays an obese lady who decides to prepare for and complete the New York marathon in order to lose weight and, she hopes, to improve her life. Changes do occur, but they are a mixed bag of both good and bad since Bell’s character discovers the hard way that her problems stem from who she is as a person rather than from how she seems to others. It’s an unexpected, endearing, and frequently hilarious comedy with some added romance.

In addition, Bell provides a star-making performance that effectively balances tragic and humorous elements. It’s also truly emotional. One of the finest comedies of 2019 and one of the best movies of the year overall is Brittany Runs a Marathon.
