Tom Hardy’s comeback as Marvel’s anti-hero, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, has received mixed reviews.
The first reviews for Venom: Let There Be Carnage have begun to arrive. So far, the Tom Hardy-starrer sequel has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 58 percent, which is about average, following 91 critical reviews.
The studio Sony, on the other hand, is unconcerned about this, as the original Venom film received just 30% on the review aggregation site yet went on to become a massive global blockbuster, making $856 million on a budget of approximately $116 million.
“A sequel targeted straight at fans of the original’s odd couple chemistry, Venom: Let There Be Carnage gleefully embraces the franchise’s sillier side,” says the critical consensus.
The film follows the narrative of investigative reporter Eddie Brock, directed by Andy Serkis and written by Kelly Marcel based on a storey by Marcel and Hardy. Eddie was infected by a sentient extraterrestrial parasite called Venom in the first film, which gave him superhuman abilities while also inhabiting his body like an unwanted guest.
Cletus Kassidy or Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson, is a serial murderer who is infected with another symbiote (Carnage). Harrelson made a cameo appearance in the mid-credits sequence of the first film.
Michelle Williams and Reid Scott reprise their roles from the first film. Stephen Graham and Naomie Harris also star.
“To its twisted credit, Venom 2, as it is being dubbed, manipulates its viewers with all the tentacles it can deploy, most of them joyfully ridiculous,” said Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal.
“Andy Serkis keeps the boisterous proceedings reasonably taut, leaving room for operatic action and a subtle emotional undertone that pokes through the broad humour and comic-book grandeur,” Screen International’s Tim Grierson wrote.
“This is, in essence, a comic blood bath about two threesomes both in dire need of throuples therapy,” Amy Nicholson of the New York Times said in her review.
Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair was more pessimistic. “It is largely loud, flimsy, and purposeless, a hurried response to the original’s surprise popularity and nothing else,” he wrote. Obviously, a third picture is promoted in the end.”
