Nayagan Movie Synopsis
Nayagan – After witnessing his father’s horrible death, Velu Nayakan murders a corrupt cop and flees to Mumbai, where he becomes a criminal.

Mani Ratnam’s 1987 Tamil-language criminal drama film Nayakan (sometimes spelled Nayagan) was written and directed by him. Kamal Haasan and Saranya (in her feature debut) appear in the film, which also has Karthika, Nassar, Janagaraj, Delhi Ganesh, and Tinnu Anand in supporting parts. It centers around the metamorphosis of an average slum dweller named Velu into a dreaded don through several periods of his life, loosely inspired by the story of Bombay underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar.
Nayakan was released on Diwali Day, October 21, 1987, and was a critical and economic triumph. Haasan won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance. In addition, the film received National Awards for Best Cinematography (P. C. Sreeram) and Best Art Direction (Thota Tharani).
It has since appeared on other best-of lists, including TIME’s “All-Time 100 Best Films” and CNN-“100 IBN’s Greatest Indian Films of All Time.” Dayavan was a Hindi remake of the film (1988).

Nayagan Movie Review
The police detain Sakthivel “Velu,” the sole son of an anti-government union leader, in order to locate him. They deceive Velu into thinking they are well-wishers and then release him. When Velu runs into his father, the cops murder him. Sakthivel, feeling deceived, stabs the police inspector and flees to Bombay, where he is fostered by Hussain, a good-hearted smuggler from the Dharavi slums.
When Hussain becomes ill, Velu, now a young man, chooses to carry on Hussain’s smuggling business on his behalf. His demand for a higher fee from the smugglers enrages them, and they enlist the help of a police officer named Kelkar to apprehend Hussain and assassinate him in jail. When the case is closed as a suicide, Velu becomes outraged and murders Kelkar. Later, he looks after Kelkar’s family, which includes his wife and his mentally challenged son Ajit. Kelkar’s wife was aware that her husband had died as a result of his immorality.
Velu meets Neela, a young girl who has been pushed into prostitution but wishes to continue her education. Velu is impressed by her purity and marries her. Surya and Charumathi are their two children.
Velu’s authority and influence in Dharavi grow over time as he speaks out in behalf of locals, gaining him widespread recognition. In Bombay, his rival smugglers attempt to assassinate Velu, but Neela is slain instead. Velu takes his children to Madras to protect them after avenging his wife’s murder.

Velu’s dominance grows in Bombay as the years past, and he is affectionately referred to as “Velu Naicker” by everybody. After completing their schooling, Surya and Charumathi return to Bombay as adults. Surya follows in Velu’s footsteps, something he is initially uncomfortable about but eventually accepts.
However, after Surya is killed while attempting to evade the police in a failed mission, Charumathi accuses Velu of killing Neela and Surya. She decides to leave Bombay, expressing a desire to be free of her father’s aggressive tendencies. Charumathi abandons her father’s home and disowns him.
Years later, a new assistant commissioner of police, Patil, is dispatched to Bombay to hunt down criminals, with Velu as his first target. He gathers all of the evidence required to apprehend Velu. When Velu meets Patil, he discovers that Charumathi is his wife and that they have a son.
Patil, too, discovers that his wife is Velu’s daughter and fears that she would assist her father in eluding the cops.
Velu flees, and his associates are apprehended. To rescue them from being tortured at the police station, he chooses to surrender to the cops. Velu arranges his surrender through Charumathi. Patil is taken aback by the lack of adequate proof against Velu, as no one from the public comes forward to testify against his misdeeds.
